OF CAPTAIN (ASW) JPKP KUMARA NRX 1360
Captain
(ASW) JPKP Kumara is a proud product of Karandeniya Central College and Dharmasoka
College, Ambalangoda. He joined Sri Lanka navy as an Officer Cadet of 15th
Intake of Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) on 5th October 1997.
After two years of military and academic training at KDU, he joined Naval &
Maritime Academy for naval training and was adjudged the best Midshipman at the
Commissioning parade.
He has amply demonstrated his academic and professional credentials
in his 24 years naval career being the first in order of merit of the 10th
Sub Lieutenant Technical Course and 3rd Junior Naval Staff Course at
NMA. He is also a recipient of the President’s trophy being the first in order
of merit and securing merit grade at the convocation of the 10th MSc
in Management programme at KDU. He was among a few in his batch, who secured a
second class upper division (Hons) in Bachelors (Defence) degree in Management
and Technical Sciences at the convocation.
Captain (ASW) JPKP Kumara is specialized in Anti Submarine
Warfare (ASW) from Indian navy, later appointed as the Officer In Charge of the
ASW school at NMA. He obtained ‘pass staff navy’ qualification from Pakistan
Navy War College, where he earned his second Masters degree from the
prestigious National Defence University, Islamabad. He also holds a Diploma in
International Relations from the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies.
Furthermore he has completed the Diploma course in Creative Diplomacy at
Regional Centre for Strategic Studies. Recently he earned his third Masters
degree in Labour Relations and Human Resource Management with a merit from the
Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Colombo.
His last sea command was the Commanding Officer SLNS
Wickrama II and earlier he had commanded two Fast Attack Craft namely P 441 and
P439. He has been awarded ‘Rana Sura Padakkama’ thrice for the acts of
gallantry for the acts of bravery displayed during the battle against Sea
Tigers and also commended twice by the Commander of the navy.
Captain (ASW) JPKP Kumara is a talented leadership trainer,
who has contributed immensely in developing leadership skills and Officer Like
Qualities among Officer Under Trainees, Sailor Under Trainees and University
Entrants. Recently he successfully completed the ‘International Maritime
Officers Course’ at United States Coast Guard Training Centre, Yorktown and
became the honour graduate bringing glory to Sri Lanka.
Captain (ASW) JPKP Kumara was appointed as a Justice in
Peace for Whole Island by the Ministry of Justice in 2018 and he is also an
Associate Member of Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM) Sri
Lanka. Presently he is serving as the Director Personnel and Adminstration at
Sri Lanka Coast Guard Headquarters, Mirissa and reading for Ph.D at the Faculty
of Graduate Studies at Gen. Sir. John Kotelawala Defence University.
He is married to Tharanga and blessed with daughter and
son.

Compiled a book on ‘100 great
inspirational quotes for future leaders’ and published.

Presented a research paper on ‘Study on the
effectiveness of performance appraisal system of the Sri Lanka Navy’ at
Faculty of Graduate Studies, Gen. Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, in
2012.
Presented a research paper on ‘Maritime interdiction
in counter-insurgency; role of SLN in defeating Tamil Tigers’ at Pakistan
Navy War College, Lahore in 2013.
Presented a research paper on ‘Trincomalee harbour and
its strategic significance in contemporary geopolitics’ at KDU 12th
International Research Conference, September 2019.
Presented a research paper on ‘ Leadership behaviour
and turnover intention in Navy; A theoretical and empirical discourse’ at
Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Colombo.
Presented a research paper on ‘Outbreak of Islamist
extremism in Sri Lanka and suggestions for long lasting solution’ at KDU 13th
International Research Conference, August 2020.
